Make Elliptical Exercise More Fun

Most of us don’t wake up in the morning with the thought of going to the gym to lift weights or exercise on an elliptical machine. And we certainly don’t want to go exercise at the gym after work. And even with a great home gym or workout DVDs, even the thought of exercising at home with your own equipment can be less than exciting.

Motivating yourself to exercise on a regular basis is one of the hardest obstacles to overcome. No matter how you look at it, or if you enjoy exercise, there just going to be times when it is going to seem boring and tedious. It’s a challenge, but taking effort to make exercise seem more fun can help you beat the exercise barriers.

Try these tips for making exercise more fun:

  • Exercise with a friend
You and your workout buddy can challenge each other, help one another stay motivated and on track. Make each other laugh, make it a game, or make it a competition! I always feel more compelled to work harder if I have a friend with me. This may be more difficult if you are working out at home given the limited space, but you can still make a party out of it
  •

  • Switch it up
Try doing something different. Don’t just run on your elliptical machine every day. Add in a workout ball, a DVD, get outside, or lift some free weights. Try different exercises on your elliptical machine to push yourself or save your favorite podcast or DVR recorded television show for your workout.

  • Get outside
Go to a park that has playground equipment and use the slide, climb on the monkey bars, do pull-ups, hang from your knees. Be a kid again! An outdoor circuit in the park is also something you can try. There are some parks that have circuit courses set up with a planned course where all you have to do is walk or jog to each station and then follow the instructions. If there isn’t a planned course, then you should do a combination of jogging and walking, picking a distance of a couple hundred feet. Jog 100 feet then drop and do a couple of pushups, walk the next 100 feet and then drop to do sit ups. You can also ride a bike around your neighborhood or hike on a hiking trail. A walk in the park or around your neighborhood is also a great way to get some exercise.

As you can tell, there are plenty of ways you can make exercise more fun and interesting. You don’t need to follow the same routine day after day, as you can do many other things to get in some exercise. The important thing is that you should always try to incorporate exercise of any form into your everyday life. By making exercise fun, you’ll be on the right track and facilitating healthy lifestyle habits.
