The Schwinn 428p was reated a best buy on Consumer Guide’s website but this elliptical has been replaced by the 438 model which I feel is a better buy. This model was the upgrade for the 418 which included more resistance levels and a wireless chest strap that lets you get more out of your heart rate control programs. However, this machine costs a little bit more than the 438 elliptical and you can only find it online from a few fitness retailers. Because of the cost and the fact that it doesn’t have custom user programs, I would choose the 438 elliptical instead.
Pros
- 18” stride length with articulating pedals
- heart rate control programs with wireless chest strap
- 300 lb user weight limit
- LED console
Cons
- only 6 programs
- no custom user programs
- the warranty could be better for this price range
Pedals and Motions
| Stride Length | 18” (fixed) | |
| Pedal Spacing | 2” | |
| Resistance Levels | 16 |
The Schwinn 428p elliptical uses an Eddy Current Braking system to create 16 levels of resistance. The stride length of 18” with articulating foot pedals is a great feature.
Programs and Console
| Console | LED | |
| Programs | 6 | |
| Heart Rate Control | Yes |
Instead of the blue backlit LCD, the Schwinn 428p comes with an LED display. For the price, you would expect to get more than 6 programs. Again, this is why the Schwinn 438 elliptical replaces this machine with a hefty 21 programs that will keep you busy and motivated for years to come. Like the Schwinn 438, you’ll get a wireless chest strap for monitoring your heart rate.

This machine requires 110v power supply to power the console and the elliptical. The machine offers smooth and silent operation. The warranty could be better.
