Schwinn 438

The Schwinn 438 elliptical a great buy and I would probably choose it over all of the other Schwinn ellipticals, because it comes with a wireless chest strap for the heart rate control programs and the convenience of having 4 custom user programs.

This machine is an upgrade from the 418 and 430 Schwinn ellipticals and is the replacement model for the 428p model. It still has the same basic structure as the others with a front drive system, articulating foot pedals, LCD console, and an 18” stride length but you are getting a lot more for just a little bit more money. The below average warranty is the only downside.

Pros

  • 18″ stride length articulating food pedals, pedals are also cushioned
  • 21 user programs and 4 custom user programs
  • heart rate control programs with a wireless chest strap
  • Blue Backlit LCD for dimly lit workouts

Cons

  • warranty could be better
  • 1 year on the electronics could mean expensive repairs if something were to happen in the future

Pedals and Motions

  Stride Length 18” (fixed)
  Pedal Spacing 2”
  Resistance Levels 16

All of the Schwinn ellipticals use an Eddy Current Braking system (magnetic brake) to create the resistance levels. This type of breaking system is more common on elliptical machines these days because there is less wear and tear on the parts. The stride length should be comfortable for the majority of users under 6′ in height. Consumers report that the pedal spacing is more comfortable than most machines in this price range and your pedals are upgraded with cushioned foot plates. You will be able to track your workout progress in forward and reverse motion.

Programs and Console

  Console Blue Backlit LCD
  Programs 21
  Heart Rate Control Yes

On this elliptical machine your LCD console is blue backlit, allowing you to monitor your workout progress while working out in a dim room. The 21 programs will keep you busy and motivated and you’ll also get those luxury 4 custom user programs. Custom user programs are great, especially when there are multiple members of the household using the machine. The 418 does have heart rate control programs, but you have to keep your hands positioned on the hand grip sensors for them to work. With the Schwinn 438, you’ll get a wireless chest strap which will allow you to add the upper body workout (because you won’t have to hold on to the stationary hand grips).

Product Design

  User Weight Limit 300 lbs
  Footprint 66” L x 25” W x 66 ” H
Warranty 15 years Frame, 2 years Parts, 1 year Electronics, 6 months labor

The user weight limit of 300 lbs is an average weight limit for machines in this price range. This machine requires 110v power supply to power the console and the elliptical. The machine offers smooth and silent operation. The warranty could be better, especially for the electronics. The computer display will be one of your most expensive replacement parts if something were to go wrong in the future. However, usually if there is a problem with the console, you’ll notice it up front.

The moving handlebars have 3 settings to accommodate a wide range of body types. This is great and helps promote correct ergonomics on the machine so you do not have to reach or lean forward to include an upper body workout.

Extra Accessories

This machine has a water bottle holder. The console adds a fan but this is not a must have. The 3 position handlebars are great extra and might be a necessity for your household.

Schwinn 438 Replaces the 428p

This elliptical machine replaces the Schwinn 428p. If you stumbled upon 428p ellipticals at another review site or an online fitness dealer, I would strongly recommend you purchase the Schwinn 438 instead. You can still find the 428p through a few online retailers, and you will be purchasing a new machine with the full manufactures warranty but there are quite a few reasons why the Schwinn 438 is the better buy:

  • The price is more competitive at about $100-$400 cheaper
  • 4 custom user programs (0 on the 432p)
  • 21 pre-programmed workouts (only 6 on the 432p)

Other then those features mentioned above, the two machines are basically the same. So why spend more on a machine that has less? Go with the Schwinn 438 instead.

Price and Where to Buy

  Retail Price $1,299
  Best Price Online $999

You might be able to purchase this elliptical at your local fitness specialty store or online. Mass retail stores usually tend to just carry the 418. If you can find a deal online where shipping is included, that is going to be your best buy and ensures that the product will safely arrive to your home.
